The story follows the lives of sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood who, along with their mother and younger sister Margaret, suddenly find themselves in financial hardship following the death of their father—whose entire inheritance passes to his son from a previous marriage, John, due to the laws of the time. Forced to leave their family home in Sussex, the Dashwood women move to a modest cottage in Devonshire. Here, the two elder sisters—who differ greatly in temperament, with Elinor guided by prudence and emotional restraint ("sense," or reason) and Marianne by impulse and romantic passion ("sensibility," or feeling)—must navigate rigid social conventions and the heartache of their respective, turbulent first loves, embodied by Edward Ferrars, John Willoughby, and Colonel Brandon.
